Learning to play musical instruments as an adult stimulates brain function and is a great way to express your creativity. Our instructors are experienced in teaching adult students; they will give you the knowledge, technique and confidence to play music. Daytime piano lessons are scheduled on Monday through Thursday at the Minnetonka Community Education Center. Destination ImaginationSTEMJoin a team of your peers to tackle one of five crazy challenges! You will have the chance to express your creativity, problem-solving skills and engage in teamwork before presenting your solutions at a regional tournament! Grades 3-8 Teams of 5-7 members work together and unleash their imaginations to tackle one of five crazy challenges. Teams creatively present their solutions in a performance at a regional tournament. Destination Imagination (DI) is the world's largest creative problem-solving competition for youth, with thousands of participants across the U.S. and around the world. DI teams typically meet once each week from November through mid-March. Each team is managed by a parent volunteer and sets their own meeting schedule. Minnetonka Schools DI teams consistently take top honors at every level! Participants learn to think on their feet, develop collaboration and leadership skills and have fun! MORE ABOUT DI: Destination Imagination is a project-based program that builds participants’ creativity, problem solving and teamwork in enjoyable and meaningful ways. The goals of Destination Imagination are for participants to: Foster creative and critical thinking. Learn and apply creative problem solving. Develop teamwork, collaboration and leadership skills. Nurture research and inquiry skills. Enhance and apply written and verbal communication and presentation skills. Encourage competence in, enthusiasm for and commitment to real-life problem solving. ABOUT OUR DI TEAMS: Minnetonka Schools DI Teams... Consist of 5-7 members, often from the same school. Typically meet once each week from November to mid-March. Work together and unleash their imaginations to tackle one of five crazy challenges. Present their solutions in a short performance at regional, state and global tournaments. State tournament typically occurs around Spring Break, with Global Finals in May. Develop collaboration and leadership skills, think on their feet and have fun! ****Meeting dates and times will be set according to the Team Managers’ and participants’ schedules once teams are formed. TEAM MANAGERS: Each team needs an adult Team Manager to facilitate team meetings, tournament logistics and team safety. A good DI Team Manager must: Have a good sense of humor Appreciate creativity and innovation Enjoy working with children and young adults Be interested in helping young people learn creativity, teamwork and problem solving Have a positive and friendly attitude Training, resources and support for Team Managers will be provided. Driver EducationYouth Driver EducationSafeway Driving School has been creating safe, responsible teen drivers for more than 50 years. Minnetonka Community Education partners with Safeway to offer classes that emphasize defensive driving techniques. Instruction: Our program includes 30 hours of instruction, as required by law, in 10, three-hour lessons. Students can start classes at age 14½, obtain their permit at age 15 and license at age 16. The curriculum includes study guides, PowerPoint instruction, videos, discussions, worksheets and interactive software. Classes focus on critical behaviors and attitudes common to teen drivers and prepare them for the Minnesota Permit Exam. Behind-the-Wheel Instruction: Our program includes behind-the-wheel instruction. Students must complete six hours of driving lessons with a Safeway instructor before taking the Minnesota Road Exam. Lessons are divided into three, two-hour private lessons with a responsible, professional Safeway driving instructor. Students can be picked up from and dropped off at home, school or work. Safeway offers convenient, online scheduling for behind-the-wheel instruction. The lessons are given on actual city streets, highways and freeways. It is recommended that students take their first lesson 6-8 weeks after receiving their permit. Lessons should be at least 30 days apart, allowing for practice with parents between lessons and can be scheduled with Safeway Driving School. Parent Involvement: Safeway offers detailed information on its website to assist parents with understanding Minnesota laws and requirements for student drivers. Monthly parent information classes are offered online. Parents/guardians will be required to complete Safeway’s Account Verification. Safeway will be sending out an email before class begins that gives detailed information about how to login to the student’s Safeway account to verify and complete contact information and to review and acknowledge our Service Agreement. Any student who misses a class will need to log on to their Safeway account after they have missed the class and they will then be able to choose an upcoming make-up day option. Early Childhood ScreeningEarly childhood screening appointments will be released monthly (July-April). If you would like an email reminder to be notified when new dates become available, please email the screening office at laurie.harkness@minnetonkaschools.org Early Childhood Screening is required by the State of Minnesota for all preschool-aged children (ages three to five), before entering public school. It is a free and simple check on how your child is growing and developing; it is structured to include fun games that will assess multiple areas of your child’s health and development. Your child can be screened at any Minnesota school district screening office to fulfill the requirement. The one-time screening is preferred at age 3. If your child plans to enroll into kindergarten at Minnetonka Public Schools and was screened in another school district, please email a copy of their screening summary to laurie.harkness@minnetonkaschools.org To ensure a positive experience during the screening: Only one parent/guardian may accompany a child during the screening appointment.
